ABOUT

ULTRA-TRAIL CAPE TOWN 2022

Ultra-trail Cape Town hosts a variety of trail races that traverse the beautiful mountain trails of the Cape Peninsula - a world-class destination that features on many trail runners’ bucket lists. The City is shaped by two oceans and Table Mountain National Park, a dramatic mountain chain that stretches from Table Bay in the north to Cape Point in the south.

In collaboration with SANParks and the City of Cape Town, UTCT introduces their flagship 100 miler with 8000m of elevation gain.

CUT OFF: 45 hours - 13h00 on Sunday 27 November 2022

Ultra-trail Cape Town is excited to announce a major new chapter in the Event's history, placing the Event at the forefront of global trail running. In collaboration with SANParks and the City of Cape Town, UTCT introduces their flagship 100 miler with 7 850m of elevation in addition to four other distances.

Since the inaugural Event in 2014, UTCT has grown to become a major international race, with 35% of participants coming from 55 counties and boasting one of the world’s best international athlete fields. The Event has also become synonymous with a week-long festival of running where the local community welcomes runners from across the globe to Cape Town. The 100-mile route will venture from the northern mountain range of the Mother City to the more remote southern mountains, taking in additional trails from Silvermine to Kalk Bay, Kommetjie, Simonstown and beyond.

100KM

DATE: Saturday 26 November 2022

START TIME: 06h00

CUT OFF: 24 hours - 06h00 on Sunday 27 November 2022

4750m D+

No qualification required

The 100km race is a front-loaded route with two significant climbs on Table Mountain and the remote trails of Karbonkelberg within the first 50km. The second half, while equal in elevation gain, consists of more sustained gradients.

The race starts with a climb out of the city up to Signal Hill and around Lions Head, which provides stunning views of the City and the Atlantic Seaboard. Runners climb midway up Table Mountain's north face and run a contour to Platteklip Gorge, the longest vertical ascent of the race, a notorious route with gradients exceeding 35 degrees, up Table Mountain. The Platteklip Gorge climb is a long grind that loads the legs early in the race. After 25km, participants will have already covered an elevation gain of 1700m.

On reaching the top of Table Mountain, runners traverse the famous tabletop ridge, eventually arriving at Constantia Nek after an 800m technical descent. The route flattens through Orangekloof to Llandudno Aid Station and along the remote scenic coastal stretches of Sandy Bay and beyond. The second of the two steep climbs is the 600m Suther Peak and a traverse of Karbonkelberg to Hout Bay Aid Station. This part of the race either makes or breaks it for the runners, with temperatures on the rise and a scramble up this remote stretch being particularly exhausting.

The second half from Hout Bay takes runners across the beach towards East Fort and the Manganese Mines and over the mountain above Hout Bay. Runners descend via Vlakenberg to Constantia Nek where they head through the vineyards and city greenbelts to reach Alphen Trail Aid Station. From here they climb through to technical sections of Cecilia and Newlands Forests, followed by a steep drop down to below Rhodes Memorial and the last Aid Station on the outskirts of the University of Cape Town.

The final 10km requires digging deep with an intense climb to get up to the Blockhouse and lower traverse of Devils Peak. Reaching it marks the home stretch and presents incredible views of the City, the Atlantic Ocean, Table Mountain and Lions Head.

Starting in Llandudno, the route takes runners through Sandy Bay, Rocket Road and the climb to Suther Peak following the long flowing descent from Karbonkelberg to Hout Bay. Leaving the Hout Bay Aid Station you will climb the trails up to Manganese Mines and across the contour to descend via Vlakkenberg moving through De Hel through to the Alphen Trail Aid Station, taking in the vineyards and beautiful greenbelts of Constantia.

From here it is a slow climb up to the technical sections of Cecilia and Newlands Forests followed by a steep drop down into the University of Cape Town's upper campus. The final 10km requires digging deep with an intense climb to get up to the Blockhouse and lower traverse of Devil’s Peak. Reaching it marks the home stretch, with the reward of incredible views of the City, the Atlantic Ocean, Table Mountain and Lion’s Head.

The 35km Trail has two major climbs on Table Mountain (first half) and Devil's Peak (second half), while the middle of the race consists mainly of technical descents with some flat runnable sections - take note along the Newlands contour of the climb known as the 400 stairs.

The race starts at 6:00 am with a climb from Gardens Rugby Club to Kloof Corner, a trail that puts runners midway up Table Mountain's north face. With the city at their feet, they run along the contour to Platteklip Gorge, the longest vertical ascent of the race - a notorious route with gradients exceeding 35 degrees, up Table Mountain. The climb is a long grind and loads the legs very early on in the race - after 7km an elevation of 900m will have been covered. Reaching the top, runners will traverse the famous tabletop ridge with Cape Town at their feet to Maclears Beacon, the highest point of the race - 1086m.

From here the route takes runners through to Echo Valley, the Valley of Isolation and onward to the Scouts Hut next to the dams where the first Table Mountain Aid Station is located. The 35km splits from the 100km race at the end of Woodhead Dam where they make their way to Nursery Ravine which sees them rejoin the 100km and 55km races along the technical sections of Newlands Forest followed by a steep drop down into the University of Cape Town's upper campus. The final 10km requires digging deep with an intense climb to get up to the Blockhouse and lower traverse of Devils Peak. Reaching it marks the home stretch, with the reward of incredible views of the City, the Atlantic Ocean, Table Mountain and Lions Head.
