Mi CASA are one of the most acclaimed and successful bands to emerge from South Africa in recent years, Mi Casa blends the infectious Deep House & Soulful House style and musical traditions of pop, jazz, blues and indie rock. Formed in Johannesburg 2011 where they all met at a Night Lounge – the band is a national hit. Their live shows are legendary.

Mi Casa is a house band based in Johannesburg, South Africa and consisting of 3 members, Dr. Duda (producer) and pianist, J’Something (vocalist and guitarist), and Mo-T (trumpeter). The band was formed in early 2011 in Johannesburg when all three future members were at a night lounge and decided to perform together. A few months later, they released an album titled Micasa Music, which “went gold” quickly and won several awards at the 18th Annual MTN South Africa Music Awards in 2012.

The music industry is nothing new to Mi Casa, the band producer Dr.Duda has been in the industry for over fifteen years, producing and DJing alongside the likes of DJ Fresh, Dj Mandla, Dj Mbuso and making hit tracks featuring talented vocalists such as RJ Benjamin, J-Something and Zodwa amongst many others.

J-Something is a talented songwriter, vocalist and masters the guitar. This sensation began reading music at the tender age of eleven and this is when he first started playing the guitar. He has also worked with a lot of producers in the past including international artists. His zest for life and music breaths energy into the band.

Mo-T is the band’s trumpeter; he oozes with talent and lives his life through music. This talented young man comes from a musically rooted family and this is where the music bug bit him. His father, who established and played the trumpet for Mango Groove, taught him to play the trumpet at a young age and he has never looked back.

SAUDIQ KHAN is a proudly South African and respected Concert Flamenco Guitarist – a product of District Six of the 60’s in Cape Town, he was exposed to the colourful Cape Culture from an early age. He was inspired by the passionate sounds of the Flamenco guitar and once in his teens was determined to learn the music he loved. He had to leave school when he was 15 to help support his family who were forcibly evicted from District Six due to the apartheid regime. His first job was as a mailroom delivery boy in a printing business and being a car fanatic, he managed to save enough to buy a broken down VW Beatle. Discovering he had a skill for fixing cars, Saudiq approached a local Flamenco Guitarist, and bartered working on his cars in return for lessons – it wasn’t an easy time for the young teenager but Saudiq’s passion to learn to play flamenco overcame the odds stacked against him. In 1989 Saudiq was given the opportunity to travel to Lisbon where he spent some months studying under various Flamenco Maestros, learning their techniques and absorbing the music and culture. On his return to South Africa he started his own Flamenco Guitar School to promote Flamenco Guitar playing amongst local enthusiasts and into his community. South African audiences flock to hear his passionate flamenco rhythms and original compositions.

THE LEARNING INITIATIVE

The Learning Initiative was established in 2014, with the aim of making professional services available to children from disadvantaged communities to ensure that they can reach their potential in school and beyond. Research has repeatedly shown that early identification and intervention is crucial for optimal functioning and self-actualisation. In 2016 TLI partnered with the Western Cape Department of Social Development to develop, test and implement a ground-breaking, therapeutic intervention that promotes holistic child development in 4-5 year old children. The founder and Director is Dr Ingrid Ahlert a Counselling Psychologist with 15 years experience both in private practice and in the public sector. She has worked with multi-disciplinary teams at various schools, focusing on enhancing the resilience of children with learning barriers.

The Learning Initiative aims to:

  • identify young children who are at risk of developmental delays and potential barriers to learning through professional screening and assessment
  • provide trans-disciplinary interventions that promote holistic child development and focus on addressing barriers to learning
  • encourage active parent, practitioner and community involvement in the stimulation and education of young children
  • build capacity within the school, family and community through training, support and resources
  • advocate for the importance of quality ECD programmes in South Africa.

Help us to help The Learning Initiative help more children who face barriers to learning. Follow TLI on Facebook, Instagram or contact them today on 021- 3001464.
