The music sensation Lady Zamar - AKA Yamkani “Yami” Janet Banda - is an award-winning singer, songwriter, academic and philanthropist. She started young, singing at six years old and rapping under the stage name Afro Jay, inspired by the legendary Tracy Chapman. Her introduction to mainstream music came through a collaborative album, Cotton Candy which spawned hits like Mamelodi, Pitori, with producer/ DJ Junior Taurus. In no time fans wanted to see more of this incredible artist who went on to receive the Metro FM nomination for Best Duo Album and the South African Music Awards nomination for Best Dance Album and Best Duo.

With her first solo project in 2017 she established herself as a powerhouse pop artist and hit-maker through the release of her first solo project, King Zamar; in the same year she signed to Universal Music Africa. All the lead singles off the album were #1 – Love is Blind, Collide, My Baby, etc. She wrapped up the year by scooping up the coveted DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Song of the Year award for her collaborative single, Charlotte, with Prince Kaybee. Her subsequent album, Monarch also wowed fans no end, with many singles including Adore and More and More reaching the top spots on the charts. SAUDIQ KHAN is a proudly South African and respected Concert Flamenco Guitarist – a product of District Six of the 60’s in Cape Town, he was exposed to the colourful Cape Culture from an early age. He was inspired by the passionate sounds of the Flamenco guitar and once in his teens was determined to learn the music he loved. He had to leave school when he was 15 to help support his family who were forcibly evicted from District Six due to the apartheid regime. His first job was as a mailroom delivery boy in a printing business and being a car fanatic, he managed to save enough to buy a broken down VW Beatle. Discovering he had a skill for fixing cars, Saudiq approached a local Flamenco Guitarist, and bartered working on his cars in return for lessons – it wasn’t an easy time for the young teenager but Saudiq’s passion to learn to play flamenco overcame the odds stacked against him. In 1989 Saudiq was given the opportunity to travel to Lisbon where he spent some months studying under various Flamenco Maestros, learning their techniques and absorbing the music and culture. On his return to South Africa he started his own Flamenco Guitar School to promote Flamenco Guitar playing amongst local enthusiasts and into his community. South African audiences flock to hear his passionate flamenco rhythms and original compositions.

ANNOUNCEMENT

ANNOUNCEMENT: Cancellation of remainder of 2022/2023 series

Concerts in the Park had a wonderful summer season with some great shows including Mi Casa, Mango Groove, Prime Circle, Francois Van Coke, Matthew Mole, Jesse Clegg, Lee Cole and Will Linley - just to name a few!

But as winter approaches we have had to make a financial decision not to risk chancing our arm with the weather. So, we have had to cancel the remainder of the shows. Without a sponsor and with low ticket sales, CITP being a non-profit organisation cannot carry the financial risk.

Subject to being supported by a community conscious sponsor, we look forward to planning the 2023/2024 season for November. To bringing you the very best artists at an affordable price, continuing our Nation Building endeavour - building

As always, thank you to all our wonderful supporters,

— Charles Lindsay-Bowman

THE LEARNING INITIATIVE

The Learning Initiative was established in 2014, with the aim of making professional services available to children from disadvantaged communities to ensure that they can reach their potential in school and beyond. Research has repeatedly shown that early identification and intervention is crucial for optimal functioning and self-actualisation. In 2016 TLI partnered with the Western Cape Department of Social Development to develop, test and implement a ground-breaking, therapeutic intervention that promotes holistic child development in 4-5 year old children. The founder and Director is Dr Ingrid Ahlert a Counselling Psychologist with 15 years experience both in private practice and in the public sector. She has worked with multi-disciplinary teams at various schools, focusing on enhancing the resilience of children with learning barriers.

The Learning Initiative aims to:

  • identify young children who are at risk of developmental delays and potential barriers to learning through professional screening and assessment
  • provide trans-disciplinary interventions that promote holistic child development and focus on addressing barriers to learning
  • encourage active parent, practitioner and community involvement in the stimulation and education of young children
  • build capacity within the school, family and community through training, support and resources
  • advocate for the importance of quality ECD programmes in South Africa.

Help us to help The Learning Initiative help more children who face barriers to learning. Follow TLI on Facebook, Instagram or contact them today on 021- 3001464.
