ABOUT

FORAGE AND DRAW

Sat 8 June

10:30am - 3:30pm

Martine grew up in the Koo Valley near Montagu in the Little Karoo, and spent time walking with her father in the mountains, learning about the plants. Her formal art training began in high school at the Hugo Naudé Art Centre in Worcester. While studying towards a degree in architecture at the University of the Free State, she started painting small watercolour botanical paintings and was approached by the Montagu Museum to do a series of illustrations of indigenous medicinal herbs of the district. After attending botanical art master classes by Katie Lee and Jenny Phillips, she commenced with botanical art, exhibiting at group art exhibitions. She lives in Somerset West and through her love for painting the area's geophytes, wishes to bring awareness to many of the threatened species. Her artworks appear in the annual Botanical Artist Calendar and she is currently exhibiting at the Hannerie Wenhold Botanical Art Gallery as part of Grootbos Florilegium.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

The morning will begin with a short walk and forage in the Veld and Sea gardens and surrounds, guided by one of the Veld and Sea team members. You'll be introduced to the different edible weeds and indigenous plants in the area to find the plant you'd like to study and draw for the day. Once you've settled in with your plant and drawing materials, Martine will guide you through a process to better understand botanical drawing:

  • Basic graphite drawing exercises and techniques: line, tonal value, form, highlights and shadows.
  • Setting out, planning and sketching the drawing, foreshortening, negative space and perspective.
  • Refining the lines and drawing accurately.
  • Rendering in graphite using techniques learnt.
