Fri Nov 8, 12:00 - Sun Nov 10, 16:00

Nelson Mandela University, North Campus Conference Centre

ABOUT

In Africa and the world, indigenous communities produce knowledge that is apparent in sustainable technologies, healing approaches, medicinal knowledge, legal frameworks, languages, philosophies and values, pedagogies, aesthetic and architectural practices. However (and as a result of colonization and globalization), much of this knowledge is not well known and is poorly supported. Relatedly, the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of indigenes have been eroded and marginalized under colonial rule, so much so that the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) acknowledges that to advance IKS one must safeguard IPR. In the linguistic realm, English is rapidly becoming a hegemonic world language and the use of other, less widely spoken languages are declining. With this decline, cultural, psychological, political and scientific worlds are disappearing or being transformed.
