Untitled Basement presents the Benjamin Jephta Quintet 'Homecoming' Revisited

25th January 2020, 8pm.

Bassist and composer Benjamin Jephta (27) has made a name for himself as one of South Africa’s premier double and electric bass players. He's looking forward playing music from his acclaimed debut release 'Homecoming' featuring Kenan Arendse on guitar, Marcus Wyatt on trumpet, Bokani Dyer on piano and Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums.

"As musicians coming from different training institutions, we are taught a variety of concepts and are exposed to various styles and genres of music. We are taught what is ‘hip’ and what is not. I assimilated what was trendy and emulated the people I looked up to. In the processes, I lost track of the real spirit of my music. The reason I play music, the essence of what first inspired me to compose a melody.

It’s that spirit I wanted to capture by calling this album ‘Homecoming’. I wanted to explore my own history and incorporate it into this sound"

Inspired by his time at the Global Jazz Institute the quintet will explore sounds and concepts associated to the Wayne Shorter Quartets zero-gravity approach.

Jephta, the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans list recipient and winner of the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz award in 2017 is currently based in New York City after graduating from The Berklee Global Jazz Institute in Boston, USA, with a Masters degree. He has since performed with Danilo Perez, Terri-lyne Carrington, Jason Palmer and Dianne Reeves among others.
